Serving all of Electoral Area ‘J’ of the Cariboo Regional District (CRD), the West Chilcotin Search and Rescue unit provides various services to the area including searches for lost or missing persons, rescuing trapped and/or injured persons, doing evidence searches and assisting at any community emergency that may arise when requested to do so by the RCMP, BC Ambulance, BC Coroner or other Emergency Management BC affiliated authority.
All volunteers are trained emergency responders, knowledgeable of land navigation, radio communications, survival and basic emergency care. To date WCSAR has trained, equipped and responded by raising funds through private and corporate sponsors and volunteer fundraising activities.
The volunteers are committed to the work and services they provide to their community, but require a small annual source of funding that will ensure the most basic needs of the group can be met even when fundraising and/or grant applications are not sufficient or available. To this end the group has requested that the CRD determine whether or not the community is willing to provide this basic funding through taxation.
The CRD will be conducting a referendum to allow Electoral Area J electors to cast their vote on this issue. Further information about the referendum including a map of the proposed taxation area is available here.
