Upon finishing her training as a professional ballet dancer and instructor, Jessie did not expect her home town of Quesnel to have such an insatiable appetite for her skills. While cutting her teeth in bigger cities, she would frequently return to the Cariboo to deliver sold-out workshops to eager budding dancers. She soon realized that making a career of her life-long passion would be far easier in the Cariboo than in an urban centre. “In the city, there's 100 times the competition and 100 times less support. Whenever I came back home it was such a treat”. Now she teaches dance to kids and adults, grows flowers for the farmers market (because why not?) and leads a burlesque troupe with national and international notoriety.
Whether you want to be in the spotlight, or in the audience, the Cariboo region has a vibrant arts & culture scene. Our communities play host to concerts, events, and festivals throughout the year. Those with a love of theatre and performing arts can be sure to find a place to perform with one of our local theatre companies throughout the region too.
Indigenous culture has always been a part of the Cariboo. Whether you are captivated by the skill and artistry found in traditional clothing and tools, enchanted by the evolving world of First Nations dancing and music, or eager to hear the ageless legends of local Nations; places such as Xatśūll Heritage Site and events like the many Powwows offered throughout the region make the Cariboo the perfect place to deepen your understanding of indigenous culture.
Large annual events such as ArtsWells (BC Day weekend) showcase international and local musicians and artists with a long weekend of amazing entertainment held in multiple venues in Wells and Barkerville.
Unique celebrations such as the Lac La Hache Garlic Festival have a regional focus offering entertainment, food vendors, local crafts, and artisans.
Arts organizations such as the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society provide space and instruction for a vibrant community of local artisans working in ceramics, visual arts, textiles, and more.
