Water Sprinkling Restrictions

Restrictions are in effect for all CRD water systems from May 1st to October 1st.

The use of water sprinklers varies for each water system, based on the amount of water available. If continued violation of the water restrictions are observed, aggressive enforcement will occur, including turning off the water supply to the property if warranted. Water sprinkling is only allowed between the hours listed for your area.

Tips for Water Conservation

1. Water your lawn only when necessary. A good way to determine if your lawn needs watering is to step on the grass. If it springs back up when you lift your foot, it doesn't need water. If it stays flat, fetch the sprinkler.
2. During dry periods, your lawn and garden will need about 1” of water PER WEEK. Place an empty tuna can at different distances from your sprinkler. Time how long it takes to collect a full can of water. Water this length of time once per week in the summer. Reduce that time by half for spring and fall.
3. Deep soak your lawn. When you do water, do it enough for the moisture to soak down to the roots where it will do the most good.
4. Cut your grass at 5 and 8 centimetres to provide shade for the roots and leave the grass cuttings on the lawn as mulch.
5. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Mulch will slow evaporation of moisture and inhibit the growth of weeds.
6. Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks.
7. Don't run the hose while washing your car. Clean the car with a pail of soapy water and use the hose only to rinse it off once complete.
8. Ask your children not to use hoses and sprinklers at play time. Consider a wading pool instead.
9. Check for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets, and couplings. Leaks outside the house may not do as much damage to your home, but they can generate even more water waste if left unrepaired.
