The regional district’s board will be taking its September 7th and 8th meetings on the road to the Interlakes Community Hall. Community Members are invited to attend the meeting. Residents can also join the Board and delegates from the Tsq’éscen First Nation for a territorial welcome and a tour of the Ice Caves at 2:15 p.m., followed by a meet and greet at 4:00 p.m. at the Community Hall, where coffee and cake will be served.
Cariboo Regional District calls for changes to Online News Act
The board is calling for changes to Bill C-18, the Online News Act, following Meta’s recent decision to block Canadian news content on Facebook, Instagram, and its other platforms. During debate, the Board highlighted significant concerns for the impacts to media outlets being unable to share local stories through Facebook and Instagram. The regional district will continue using Facebook as part of its communications strategy.
Updated recreation fees and charges for north Cariboo
A recommendation from the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee was approved by the Board to increase user fees at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre and Quesnel arenas. All fees, charges and rates will see a three-percent increase, except for adult and youth ice rental rates which will be increased by 3.5% to improve the cost-recovery of the arenas. Despite this increase, ice rental fees in Quesnel will continue to remain lower compared to other similarly sized communities, including Williams Lake, Prince George, Dawson Creek, and Comox. By making these changes, increased operating costs will be better offset by user fees.
Regional approach to economic development referred for review
A proposal to merge three economic development services into a single regional service will be getting a closer look from rural Directors. At a future Committee of the Whole Meeting, a more thorough review and discussion of the proposal will be held. This will include a review of how funding is allocated within existing sub-regional economic development services.
