CRD Commits $1 Million to Improve Access to Esler Sports Complex
The Board approved a $1 million contribution from Community Works Funds for the Esler Sports Complex Access Road project. This new road will provide safer access directly from Highway 20, easing traffic congestion and safety concerns on Hodgson Road during the spring and summer months. The Esler Sports Complex sees over 2,000 users each year across soccer, slo-pitch, fastball, disc golf, and an accessible trail. The new paved road will be about 1.3 kilometers long, run partly through Crown land under a CRD license, and meet provincial highway standards.
This project has been in discussion since 2008, and major studies and timber clearing has been completed. A final detailed design and cost estimate are expected by fall 2025. The full project is expected to cost $4 million, with additional funding required through a mix of taxation from the Central Cariboo Leisure and Recreation service and other external funding sources. Once built to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) standards, the road is expected to be maintained by MOTI.
Audited financial statements received for 2024
The CRD has approved the audited financial statements for the 2024 fiscal year. Audited financial statements prepared by an external auditor are required under provincial law every year from every local government. The CRD received a clean audit opinion, and spending for the previous year was compliant with the 2024 Financial Plan. Revenues of $47.6 million and expenses of $41.1 million lead to approximately $6.5 million in surplus funds being directed to reserve accounts at the end of 2024. Cash and cash equivalents at year end totaled $60.7 million, of which $19.9 million is restricted in capital, maintenance, and feasibility study reserves. The remainder reflects the CRD’s need to retain 50% of operational expenses to ensure cash-flow stability until tax requisition income is received in July of each year. CCRHD inquires about a potential need for helipad at WLSS property
The Regional Hospital District will be sending a letter to Interior Health and the Ministry of Health requesting they investigate options for a helipad in Williams Lake. A dedicated landing zone close to the hospital would reduce delays in transferring patients from air ambulances at the airport, improving outcomes for trauma and critical care, especially for those in remote or rural areas.
