Williams Lake, BC – Starting May 1, 2025, the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) will introduce new irrigation restrictions and a Water Services Management Bylaw to support water conservation and protect local water systems.
The new rules are being put in place because many community water systems are aging, and water levels often rise and fall with the seasons. By following the restrictions, residents can help reduce strain on water systems, lower maintenance costs, and use water more responsibly.
The Water Services Management Bylaw includes a staged water conservation system that allows the CRD to adjust restrictions throughout the year based on weather, demand, and supply levels. These stages will help ensure that water use stays within safe limits during dry or high-use periods. The bylaw also outlines clear rules, enforcement measures, and fines for those who do not follow the restrictions.
All water users connected to CRD community water systems are expected to follow the new rules. The goal is to make water use fair and consistent across the region, while helping communities prepare for long-term challenges like climate change and population growth. Being mindful of water use now helps avoid serious problems later.
