Earth Flow Composter

New Food Waste Composting Program

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is now composting food waste at the Central Cariboo Transfer Station in Williams Lake. Using a 40-foot Earth Flow in-vessel composter, food scraps are mixed with carbon sources to create nutrient-rich compost instead of going to the landfill.

Residents can drop off food waste at the Central Cariboo, 150 Mile, Wildwood, and Frost Creek transfer stations. Handouts are available at each site with clear “what goes in / what stays out” guidelines.

This program helps reduce methane emissions, cuts transportation costs, saves landfill space, and puts valuable nutrients back into the soil.

Composting

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has launched a food waste composting program using an in-vessel Earth Flow composter at the Central Cariboo Transfer Station in Williams Lake. The system turns household food scraps into nutrient-rich compost instead of sending them to the landfill.

Residents can drop off food waste at these CRD transfer stations:

  • Central Cariboo Transfer Station (Frizzi Road, Williams Lake)

  • 150 Mile Transfer Station

  • Wildwood Transfer Station

  • Frost Creek Transfer Station

You can compost most food scraps, including:

  • Fruit and vegetable peels, cores, and scraps

  • Bread, pasta, rice, and grains

  • Meat, fish, and bones

  • Dairy products

  • Coffee grounds, filters, and tea bags

  • Eggshells

Handouts are available at each transfer station with a full “yes/no” list.

Please do not include:

  • Plastic, glass, or metal

  • Styrofoam or packaging

  • Yard waste (grass, leaves, branches)

  • Liquids (soups, oils, sauces)

  • Pet waste or diapers

About 30% of municipal solid waste in the Cariboo is compostable organics. Diverting this material helps:

  • Reduce methane emissions from landfills

  • Cut down on leachate production

  • Save landfill space and transportation costs

  • Recycle nutrients back into the soil

The Earth Flow is a 40-foot in-vessel system that mechanically mixes food waste with carbon sources (such as wood chips or shavings). Over time, the mixture breaks down into a finished compost product.

The compost will be tested and, once approved, can be used for soil improvement and landscaping projects. The CRD will provide updates on how and where it will be distributed.
