Improper use of CRD refuse sites by some users has contributed to the need for controlled sites. Sites that are not currently scheduled for controls will be evaluated to determine if controls are required. It is up to the users of each site to use them appropriately and report improper use.

Wood and metals yards are provided for the storage of clean wood and metals and appliances ONLY. Oversized items such as furniture, mattresses, and fiberglass items; or recyclables such as tires or used oil; or trailer/dump truck loads of asphalt shingles or other demolition debris do not belong in these yards. Refer to the Waste Types info sheet for definitions of clean wood and metals.

The CRD will continue to accept woody debris generated from fire smart activities on residential private properties at no charge. This does not include wood waste generated from land clearing for property development. If commercial vehicles, such as dump trucks, will be used to deliver FireSmart wood waste, arrangements must be made with the CRD in advance of disposal by calling 1-800-665-1636.

When disposing of FireSmart wood waste at CRD refuse sites, please remember; wood loads must be free of dirt, rocks, metals, plastics, or other garbage. Fines apply to contaminated loads. Grass clippings, leaves and tree needles will also be accepted but must be separated from woody debris. Before unloading, please let the scale or site attendant know your load is from FireSmart activities.

Please observe the following guidelines:

Share sheds are for local users only, during regular refuse site hours (after hours access is strictly prohibited).

- If the share shed is full of donated goods, hold onto your items until next time

- Do not drop off prohibited items including clothing, baby/child safety items (including car seats), dangerous items (weapons), or hazardous items (chemicals)

- Tidying or organizing items inside share sheds is encouraged, please leave them in better condition than when you arrived

Share Sheds will be closed if:

They become over-full or if prohibited items are being dropped off

- Users are aggressive or confrontational towards staff or others

- Users loiter on foot or in vehicles, or if share shed traffic inhibits refuse site operations

Share sheds are provided for the re-use of general household items that are in good condition. Please take clothing to your local thrift store, as they quickly deteriorate in share sheds. All electronics and small appliances should be dropped off at your local product stewardship depot, rather than a share shed. Refer to the recycling brochures on the recycling page for depot locations.

All product stewardship items such as tires, used oil, automotive coolant, oil filters, electronics, beverage containers, compact fluorescent lights, batteries (household and auto), medications, paints, flammable liquids, pesticides, and cell phones can be dropped off at local depots for recycling. Transfer station bins are for the containment of household /mixed waste and small amounts of demolition and construction debris. Ensure doors are closed after use to keep wildlife out, never put hot ashes or burning material into a bin.

Landfill trenches are for disposal of household/mixed waste, and demolition/construction debris. Use caution at the tipping edge for your safety. Never put hot ashes or burning material into a trench.
