The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is located in the Central Interior of B.C. The region's boundaries cover 80,252 square kilometers of land in the traditional territories of First Nations in the Dakelh, Secwépemc, and Tŝilhqot'in language groups. The Cariboo and Coastal mountain ranges hug the CRD on its west and east side boundaries. The region straddles Highway 97 from Green Lake in the south to 5 km south of Hixon in the north.
Incorporated in 1968, the CRD has 12 electoral areas and four incorporated municipalities: Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, and Wells.
Services
The Regional District delivers community services throughout the region including: garbage disposal and recycling, land use and development regulation, emergency management, libraries, structural fire protection, recreation, invasive plant management, and utility services. These services are provided to specified service areas throughout the region.
Unlike a municipality, these services are not universally available, and property owners generally have participated in an elector approval process in the past to be included in a local service area.
Tax distribution
The CRD administers three different types of services. Each year, a requisition amount is set by the CRD and provided to the Province of B.C.'s Rural Property Tax Branch, which then determines the property tax rate to be charged against individual property's assessed values. Service fees, typically charged for utility services like water and sewer, are collected directly by the CRD.
Property owners pay taxes for region-wide services and each service area they are part of. The tax rates for each service are the same for all properties in the service area; however, the total amount paid depends on the property's assessed value.
