Project Overview
The Cariboo Regional District is exploring long-term solutions to improve water quality in the Bouchie Lake watershed. One option under review is the development of a community sewer system to help reduce nutrient inflow from aging or failing septic systems around the lake.
Current Status
The feasibility study examining potential sewer system options for the Bouchie Lake area has been completed.
The results of the study, along with feedback gathered through community engagement, were presented to the Cariboo Regional District Board of Directors at the March 20, 2026 Board meeting.
Following this review, the Board passed the following resolution:
That the Board not proceed further with planning for the Bouchie Lake Sewer System project based on the results of the community engagement process.
As a result, the Cariboo Regional District will not be moving forward with the project at this time.
Background
The Bouchie Lake watershed has experienced ongoing water quality concerns, including elevated nutrient levels that may be associated with runoff and aging septic systems around the lake.
Spring 2024 – Initial Public Engagement
Public engagement took place between April 15 and May 15, 2024. Residents were invited to complete an input survey and attend a public information meeting held on April 30, 2024, at the Bouchie Lake Community Hall. More than 60 residents attended the meeting, and a total of 83 surveys were submitted, including 26 completed during the event.
2025 – Feasibility Study Initiated
Following this initial engagement, the Cariboo Regional District initiated a feasibility study to examine whether a community sewer system could be a potential long-term option to help reduce nutrient inflow to the lake. The study reviewed possible servicing approaches, estimated capital and operating costs, and potential funding considerations.
The feasibility study was intended to provide information to support community discussion and decision-making. It did not establish a sewer service.
2026 – Study Results and Community Input
The feasibility study results were shared with the Board along with a recommendation that the project not proceed further at this time.
A public information meeting was held with residents to present the results of the study and answer questions about potential servicing options, estimated costs, and funding considerations. A survey was also made available to affected residents to gather feedback on the proposed project.
The results of this engagement were included in a report presented to the Board on March 20, 2026.
